Your body is tired. You can feel it. But the moment your head hits the pillow, something shifts โ your mind picks up where the day left off, your heart beats a little faster than it should, and the sleep that should come naturally just doesn’t.
What’s actually happening is that your nervous system is locked in a state of sympathetic dominance. The same biological alert state that kept your cortisol elevated all day hasn’t been given the signal to stand down. Melatonin, the hormone your body needs to initiate and sustain sleep, can only rise when cortisol falls. When that switch doesn’t happen, your body is literally unable to down regulate on demand โ no matter how exhausted you are.
Why everything you've tried has only partially worked
The reason nothing has fully worked is that everything you’ve tried has addressed the experience of not sleeping โ without touching the system that’s producing it. Sleep hygiene works when the nervous system is fundamentally regulated and just needs better conditions. It doesn’t work when the nervous system itself is the problem.
Medication creates the neurological conditions for sleep chemically โ but it doesn’t retrain anything, which is why the night you stop taking it, the pattern returns. What’s been missing isn’t a better supplement or a better routine. It’s an approach that works directly with the neurological state that’s generating insomnia in the first place.
Insomnia Treatment in Dublin
At Vibrant Life Chiropractic in Rathfarnham, we don’t start by treating your sleep. We start by measuring your nervous system.
Before any care plan is agreed or adjustment is made, we use the NeuroInfiniti Stress Response Evaluation โ a clinical neurophysiological assessment that measures exactly how your brain and nervous system are functioning under stress and at rest. From there, we build a care plan around what we find, combining brain-based chiropractic, neurofeedback, and BrainTap technology to address the neurological patterns driving your insomnia directly.
Brain-Based Chiropractic Adjustments
Your spine is the primary pathway through which your brain communicates with the rest of your body โ and through which stress signals travel in both directions. Restriction and tension in the spine, particularly in the upper cervical and thoracic regions, generates a sustained afferent stress load into the brainstem and central nervous system. Your brain interprets this as a persistent low-level threat. It stays in sympathetic dominance. It doesn’t switch off โ not during the day, and not at night.
Gentle, targeted adjustments reduce that neurological interference. Over the course of care, this supports a measurable shift in autonomic balance โ from the chronic sympathetic activation that’s been keeping you alert and wired, toward the parasympathetic function your body needs to enter and sustain restorative sleep. We track this shift objectively through your progress evaluations, so you’re not relying on how you feel alone to know whether things are changing.
Neurofeedback Therapy
Chronic insomnia has a consistent neurological signature. Quantitative EEG research shows an overproduction of high-frequency beta wave activity in people who can’t sleep โ the same brainwave pattern associated with active thinking, alertness, and cognitive arousal โ persisting into sleep onset and throughout the night, when the brain should be transitioning into the slower alpha and theta activity associated with relaxation and deep rest.
Neurofeedback works directly with this. During a session, sensors placed on the scalp measure your brainwave activity in real time. When your brain produces patterns consistent with calm, regulated, sleep-conducive states, it receives an immediate positive signal. When it doesn’t, the signal stops. Through repeated sessions, the brain learns โ through this operant conditioning process โ to produce those calmer states more reliably, including in the conditions where it has previously defaulted to hyperarousal.
BrainTap
BrainTap is a guided brainwave entrainment technology that uses precisely calibrated light and sound frequencies to shift the brain out of high-frequency beta dominance and into the alpha and theta states associated with deep relaxation and recovery.
Used as part of your care plan at Vibrant Life, BrainTap sessions of 15 to 20 minutes work alongside your chiropractic and neurofeedback care to reinforce the neurological changes happening in clinic โ giving your brain repeated, structured exposure to the states it’s been unable to access on its own. For patients whose nervous systems have been running on high alert for years, it’s often the first time in a long time that rest feels genuinely possible rather than just theoretically desirable.
What changes when you start sleeping properly?
The clients we work with describe changes that reach into every part of their lives.
Sharper cognitive function
The mental fog starts to lift. Thinking becomes clearer and faster โ the sharpness they thought they’d just lost with age begins to come back.
ย
Improved emotional regulation
More patience, more capacity, more of themselves โ the irritability that came with exhaustion begins to ease.
ย
Quieter anxiety
That low-level hum that’s been there so long it started to feel like personality โ consistently sleeping well progressively dampens the stress response that’s been amplifying it.
ย
More stable energy
Reducing dependence on caffeine to get through the afternoon. The body starts recovering the way it’s supposed to during sleep.
ย
A sense of being back in control
Of your mornings, your days, yourself.
Why Vibrant Life
Dublin’s only dedicated brain-based chiropractic practice, in operation since 2005. Over twenty years of working specifically with the neurological root causes of chronic conditions โ including insomnia, anxiety, migraines, hormonal dysregulation, and the kind of exhaustion that sleep alone doesn’t fix.
We understand the relationship between sustained stress, hormonal shifts, and the nervous system dysregulation that keeps so many patients lying awake at night. We see this pattern every week. We know what drives it and we know how to work with it.
Our assessments are objective and data-driven. We measure what’s actually happening in your nervous system before we do anything โ so you’re not taking our word for it. You can see it. Covered by VHI, Laya Healthcare, Irish Life Health, and HSF. Members of the Chiropractic Association of Ireland.
What Happens When You Come In
01- Your First Visit
Your first appointment is a conversation to understand the full picture โ how long this has been going on, how it’s changed, and what you’ve already tried. From there we move into a thorough brain-based neurological examination, including the NeuroInfiniti Stress Response Evaluation of how your nervous system is actually functioning.
02 - Your Second Visit
A few days later we sit down and go through everything we found. We show you your results, explain what they mean in plain language, and walk you through the care plan we’ve built specifically around what your assessment reveals.
03 - Your Regular Visits
Focused, structured, and scheduled around your life. Periodically throughout your care we conduct progress evaluations โ measuring how your nervous system is actually functioning. You’ll always have a clear, honest picture of how things are moving.
No. The brain retains its capacity for change โ neuroplasticity โ throughout adult life. Patterns established over years can shift with the right approach. What chronic insomnia usually means is that a surface-level fix won’t be enough. The nervous system itself needs to be addressed. That’s where we start.
Yes โ and we’d encourage it. Many of the women we see are currently taking or have recently come off sleeping tablets and are looking for a way back to natural sleep. We never advise stopping any prescribed medication without your GP’s involvement. But supporting your nervous system alongside your existing care is something we do regularly, and it’s often where the real shift begins.
Most people notice some change in the first four to six weeks โ typically falling asleep more easily or waking less frequently. Deeper, more sustained improvement generally builds over three to six months of consistent care. We’ll give you a realistic picture of what to expect for your specific situation at your initial assessment.
